1918 Midsummer

Midsummer 1918 (Aged 14)

I returned to Winchester on 1st of May, Michael being a few days late owing to quarantine.
I was again up to Mr Robinson in Middle Part 3, and he reports that my work showed distinct improvement, that I had put thought into it but complains of my lack of accuracy. 10/25
In Greek that I worked better towards the end of the half and improved generally.
In Maths 2/22 “a very satisfactory worker”.
In French my knowledge is said to be very weak.
Mr Rendall was satisfied with me and expects progress.
Michael was Sen. Co. Prae. and was given his cap though only 12th man at Lords for getting 4 wickets for 3 runs against Bradfield.
I played in Toys Cup, which we won, beating Furleys in the final. In the 2nd innings Raikes and Pinney bowled them out for 13. I also played 3 times for the house. A great deal of time was taken up in agricultural work. We beat Harrow and were beaten at Lords, at Eton, where we all met. Father, Mother and Veronica coming down and I being allowed to go with Michael on the plea of meeting Bertram and Nigel.
Michael left before the end of the half to start his training for the RFA. We did not break up until August 14th when I went straight to Daneshill, Veronica getting a

month’s leave from Henley Park Hospital. Bertram worked on the farm for Mr Barton. We spent most of our time preparing the lawn tennis court, playing and shooting rabbits. Nigel and I went for a fortnight to stay with

at Walton on the Naze, where Cousin Geoff was quartered and I came back to Hastings and then moved with Father to Folkestone the RAF brigade going to Shorncliffe.
