1918 Short Half

Short Half 1918 (Aged 14)
I returned to Winchester on Oct 9, and was up to Mr Duff in the middle part Mid Div 1 ending up 15/25. In exams I was 6th. He reports that I have worked steadily and made progress in spite of dreaminess at times, the best points being my Divinity and English essays.
In Greek, very good.
In Maths, I was up to Mr Durell, 8th out of 22 and he says that I have worked very well and made satisfactory progress.
In French up to Mr Irving, who says that my elementary knowledge is very unsound, but that I can work and learn well.
Mr Rendall remarks that in exams, I made a great advance making it difficult to account for my low place in form.
Mr Bather is puzzled by this too, but says that I have worked well with a clear sense of duty and should eventually do very well.
On the whole a good report.
I played 3rd row in the
hotsA rugby-type scrum.
for Junior Game,
CanvasThe name for the pitch on which Winchester College football was played
, we beat Commoners 11-2.
In the 15s Commoners won all 4 and we beat College twice.
I started in the O.T.C. and had to do 3 drills per week.

I played a good deal of fives.
Mother came down once.
When the Armistice came through we had some grand rejoicings, with good fireworks at the end of the half.
We were all at Daneshill together for the holidays getting back home after 5 years, and with the shortage of servants had to do a lot of the work ourselves.
I spend 5 days at Liphook with Uncle Harry and Aunt Gladys. We much enjoyed the family football matches and tree cuttings, a very wet, mild winter.
