My father – David Walter Hoare, kept a diary and set of accounts to cover his school days, first at Ludgrove and then at Winchester. I suspect he was made to do this by his father. It gives quite an interesting insight on his early life and those times – but if you are unfamiliar with his style of handwriting – they are quite difficult to read. In the following pages I have attempted to transcribe them and provide further background information where possible.
David’s parents Walter Robertson Hoare and Constance Gertrude Hill married at Llandaff Cathedral on 28 Oct 1897.
They produced eight children:
- Veronica Constance Hoare 11 Aug 1898 – 23 Apr 1992
- Michael Walter Hoare 08 Feb 1900 – 01 Feb 1966
- Bertram Edward Walter Hoare 19 Jun 1901 – 01 Jul 1994
- Nigel Walter Hoare 29 Sep 1902 – 16 Jan 1988
- David Walter Hoare 10 Mar 1904 – 13 Mar 1978
- Jocelyn Walter Hoare 20 Aug 1905 – 12 Feb 1977
- Rosemary Constance Hoare 08 Feb 1907 – 21 Nov 2001
- Faith Octavia Winifred Hoare 06 May 1909 – 13 Jan 1994
The family built and lived at Daneshill, Old Basing, Hampshire.
