Common Time 1922 (Aged 17)
I returned to Winchester on Jan 18 and was up to Mr Blore in 6th Book B. My places were as follows:
Divinity 11/18, History 16/18, Latin 15/18
And Mr Blore reports: “At present a rather weak vessel judged by the standard of this Divn. He takes pains and shows interest so often does well in a simple lesson, but has a poor judgement at present and his English essays are of a very poor quality.”
Maths 5/18 up to Mr Campbell, who says that I have considerable knowledge of the subject and at his best his work is most satisfactory, but that the good standard is not always maintained.
This is the fifth half that I have been working at the elements of calculus and the subject is exhausted.
French 12/16, fair work, takes pains but is not observant enough. This from Mr Blore.
Nat Science 14/33 Humby reports “not very good”, we were doing magnetism.
The Headmaster and Robertson were away at the end of the half, the latter in W. Indies, so there is no report from them.
Altogether not a very satisfactory report and I hope to show a better result next half.
It was rather a dull half and I got rather bored for the first time at Winchester. I played in Middle House at Association at back. We ought to have got into the final, but failed through an inability to score. Most of the time I kicked in the yard, a very good game, played in fives shoes with a small ball.

None of the house played fives at all.
I came home once for leave out bringing Edward and Turner, when we played golf, and I also bicycled home on Feb 28th for wedding day of Princess Mary and found it a grind on the way back.
We had very few visitors, no uncles and aunts and the Arthur Hoares were away from Ovington. Veronica and Nancy Williams came down V, playing hockey for Basingstoke vs Winchester Ladies.
Mallory came down and gave us a good lecture on Everest, 3 out of 4 climbers being Wykehamists.
Home to Daneshill in time for Easter. Romy and Faith had been confirmed so the whole family were together on Easter morning.
We played golf mainly on the home links, which have improved, my handicap was reduced. I went to the dance at Shenfield where we also played hockey. A very late season, we barely got a game of lawn tennis.
