1921 Short Half

Short Half 1921 (Aged 17)

I returned to Winchester on Sep 24th and was up to Mr Davidson in Senior Part 1 coming out 9/17, Latin 8/17, Hist 6/12, Divinity 13/17. Davidson reports that I am anxious to improve and have improved, but that I lack complete and steady concentration. He is pleased with my interest in Greek.
French, 12/15, Mr Blore remarks: “Needs more alertness and observation, seems to be trying – some progress”.
Mathematics, up to Campbell in θ, 3/16, who reports me as doing capital work lately, particularly in exams.
Science, 10/28, McDowall reports very fair – we were studying light.
The Headmaster says: “He wants to aim high and is beginning to do so”.
Mr Robertson says that I might possibly be up to Exhibition form somewhere, if not New Coll and that he thinks as well of me as ever.
I got my remove into 6th Book with nothing to spare.
We had a wonderfully dry half, too hard and dusty for football at the beginning. I played second row in Middle A. Commoners won both fifteens and sixes.

I came for leave out 3 times to Daneshill. I went to a thé dansant at the Bathers for Betty’s birthday. Mother and Aunt Gladys came down for Mother’s Union, Veronica for Guides.
Home to Daneshill, where we all together for Xmas. I went to
Cousin Cecily LambertJane Frances (Cecily) Lambert née Hoare. Daughter of Henry Gerard Hoare and Jane Frances Hoare and wife of Alfred Uvedale Miller Lambert.
for a dance at their house and to Winchester with the Bathers. We had many parties for all ages. I got 20 rabbits and we played golf on the home links and hockey at Shenfield, a very mild winter.
