1920 Common Time

Common Time 1920 (Aged 15)

I returned to Winchester on Jan 21st and was up to Mr Blakeney in Senior Part 3.
In Final order I was 14th out of 21, being in Latin 12th, Greek 7th, History 11th, Divinity 14th. He reports that I have been an attentive worker throughout the term with only moderately successful results. He expects me to be “far higher” next term.
In French 8/11 Mr Chambers reports good work and progress, but a disappointing examn. He complains of a lack of rivetting attention.
In Mathematics up to Mr Irving 2/19, he reports excellent work, particularly neat and thoughtful.
In Science up to Mr Brown 3/13 we did hydrostatics. He reports a good, intelligent worker.
Rendall reports: not a bad start in the Division.
Mr Bather says that I continue to do well in all ways and that he hopes to see me develop into a real help and influence in the House.
We played Ellis Pot (under 16) and were equal 9th with a very small side, I played right back. I played a little racquets but was disqualified from the steeplechase on the scare of a “weak heart”, which has never given me trouble otherwise.
I came for leave out to Daneshill on St Matthias with Ken and Ben and we played golf on the

new Daneshill links. Veronica came down for second leave out and we went over to Arthur’s new place at Ovington and saw hundreds of trout in the Itchen. Home to Daneshill in time for Easter. Nigel did not come back from Eton until Easter Tuesday, otherwise we were all together, the first part of the holidays very wet and stormy – we played much golf. Father, Mother, Veronica, Michael and Nigel went to Scotland where they each caught their first salmon excl Veronica.
