Cloister Time 1917 (Aged 13)
I went to Winchester for the first time on the 26th September with Michael to Mr Bather’s house,

. As the result of the scholarship examination I was placed in Junior Part I, up to books to Mr Hickey. My T.7.I have no idea what T.7. means.
for the first fortnight was J.Stevens.In Classics I was 2nd out of 21 and my report says a thoroughly satisfactory term’s work, that I take care and think clearly.I did singing 1 hr per week and drawing ¾ hr, and my English was reported v. fair.In Mathematics up to Mr Milne Thompson, who reports excellent. I was 1st in the half’s work but down to 6th on exams.In French I was up to Mr Wilson 3/19.Mr Rendall (HM) remarks that I have made a very good start, which was corroborated by Mr Bather, who sent me to bed early, because he found me asleep in toy-timeEvening homework or prep.

I went twice for leave out, once to Daneshill which was let to and to Lychpit.
In the holidays we were all at home for Xmas, Father coming for a week from Hastings (RFC). I shot 4 rabbits and 1 cock pheasant, the latter 12 (bore), rabbits with the air rifle. We went down to East Court, where the page boy got mumps, with the result that I was in quarantine for a month, spending the last week at Hastings with Father, Mother and the two little girls.
