Summer Term 1917 (Aged 13)
I returned to Ludgrove 4th May and was 2nd in the School, winding up in the same place. Mr Brown reports that I worked steadily, but complains of careless mistakes which keep me back.In Maths I was top and Mr Oakley reports that apart from the old enemy of inaccuracy I was quite up to the average of the better boys in the past.In French I was 3rd and Mr Brown says that I worked well.History 2nd and Mr Smith reports satisfactory work and steady perseverance.Geography 2nd and Mr Brown reports good work.Mr Smith says that my conduct and example at Ludgrove have been a great help to him.I was given 1 prize for Mathematics, 1 prize for Scripture and a leaving book.I was Captain of the XI and we played 7 matches, of which we won 6. 4 against
NorthawPrep school, founded in 1881 as Northaw School in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, the school later moved to Pluckley in Kent. In 1952, its premises were destroyed by fire and the school moved to its present site near Salisbury, Wiltshire and was renamed in 1995 as Norman Court School.
, my batting average was 10.11 and I took 28 wickets av 5.21 and Mr Smith reports my fielding good. I had 1 special catch which finished off the ElstreeElstree school was founded in 1848 at Hill House, Elstree, Hertfordshire. With the approach of the outbreak of the Second World War, in 1938 the school was evacuated to Woolhampton House in the Berkshire village of Woolhampton, and has remained there ever since.

House, where Michael is. I stayed with Canon Braithwaite in the Close and Father came over from Hursley RFC camp.
Home to Daneshill. I stayed 1 night with Walter Marsham at Winchester for a match and bicycled over to Hursley to tea with Father in the mess.
We were all together for 1 Sunday, a very wet August.
