1914 Summer Term

1914 Summer Term [Aged 10]

I returned to Ludgrove with Bertram and Nigel on April 30th Father and Mother seeing us off from King’s X. I had got my remove in Classics and was up to Mr Oakley in the 4th Div ending up 8th out of 11 gaining a place on Home. He gave me a good report “great improvement in the results of his work since half term”.
In Maths I was again in Div IV up to Mr Henley and had no great trouble in getting first and brought home a prize “The Cruise of the Cachalot” to the great pleasure of all at home. Mr Henley says that I worked well and that he was satisfied with my work and my methods.
In French I was up to Mr Bird in Div III and I was 12th out of 14 but he hopes that I will work harder next term and says much the same of my history in which I lost a place being 4th out of 15.
Mr Henley does not give a very good a/c of my geography in which I was 9th out of 17 in Div III. I must take more pains with my written work next term.
Mr Smith says I have made an effort since half term and that he is quite satisfied with me in every way.
I shared a room with Bertram and Kincain and Lennox and played in the 3rd game making 245 runs by half term. I was in Gurney’s 10 winning 2 matches.
The School did very well not being beaten in any match. Father played once in the match against

Free Foresters and once for Eton Ramblers against the Masters with Geoffrey he caught 6 catches in the innings. Michael came on leave out from Winchester for the ER match and Mother came down each time and brought enough strawberries to feed the whole school.
We came home to Bolton Lodge Basingstoke which we had for the summer and after 1 match against Mr Bathes’s XI at Winchester, the war broke out against Germany and Austria. Father was busy with recruiting and Mother with the organisation of a Red X Hospital at Daneshill. I was not able to do much but cleaned up the bicycle. I stayed with George Sclater-Booth at their new house the Priory Odiham for a long weekend.
