Common Time 1921 (Aged 16)
I returned to Winchester on Jan 19, and was up to Bather in Senior Part, Middle Divison.
In Latin 9/20, Greek 7/12, History 5/18, Divinity 9/25, in final order 9/21. Bather reports : “a good worker who shows common sense and some grip in all his subjects”. I enjoyed being up to him and feel that I have made some progress.
French 9/15, up to Robinson, who states that I have worked fairly but should be higher.
Mathematics, up to Humby, given no place but says I did a satisfactory term’s work (Dynamics).
Science, Chemistry up to Earle, who was under the impression that I had missed a good deal, but did my best to make good.
Rendall remarks a good start in the Division.
Bather and Robertson are pleased with my report. The latter says I have certainly made an effort and that I might get my certificate.
Also that I have been useful in the House, where things have gone more smoothly.
Altogether a half upon which I can look back with satisfaction.
I played Association – Flower Cup – in Middle House, in 2 leagues. We were about ½ way up. We then played Senior House as practice for Chalker Pot, when

I was not in the side.
I entered for Jun. Schools in Fives, drawing Joseph as a partner and got through 2 rounds after which we had to retire owing to flu. Which also interfered with leave out and Certificate A.
Nigel came from Eton to play in an inter-college match, riding a motor bicycle from Reading which broke down at Popham.
Home to Daneshill soon after Easter, where we had wonderfully fine holiday, playing lawn tennis on April 1.
One day we had snow enough to make a snowman in the morning and played lawn tennis in the evening.
We killed most of the pike in Mrs Maddocks’ water and a lot of golf on the home course, also doing a lot of work about the place owing to men serving during the coal strike.
