1913 Football half. [Aged 9]
I went to Ludgrove for the first time on 18 Sept. Father taking me and Bertram and Nigel. I was placed in the bottom div for Classics and in Mathematics one form higher. In Classics I was up to Mr Henley and was second out of 9. He gave me a good report, saying that I worked well. In Maths, Mr Smith was pleased with my work and progress, especially in the last half term. I was third out of 7. Mr Stanborough reports that in French (second out of 10) and history (third out of 14) I worked well and successfully. In Geography Mr Henley says that I am inclined to read over my work too quickly, but I was second out of 10. Mr Smith was much pleased with my general work and progress and Father was glad that I had brought home such a good report.
I was in a room with Bertram and enjoyed the whole of the half very much. I played in the third game, generally at back or half back and there was only 1 day during the half when we were stopped by rain from playing football.
Mother came down 3 times, once with Father who much enjoyed a school ‘kick about’.

and did much Xmas shopping. Daneshill is let for two years from Oct to Arthur H HoareArthur Hervey Hoare. A partner at the bank. The second son of the late Charles Hoare and Katherine, daughter of Lord Arthur Hervey, sometime Bishop of Bath and Wells, he was born on July 25, 1877, and was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. After leaving Oxford he went into the family business, but, though he was 37 when war broke out in 1914, he joined the Wessex Royal Garrison Artillery. In 1916 he was invalided home and served for a time in the War Office in the financial censorship department. Later, until demobilization, he was an instructor for heavy batteries at Larkhill and Colchester. Though his calling as a banker was naturally his greatest interest, he was able to indulge his favourite recreations of shooting, trout fishing, and yachting from his beautiful and conveniently situated home at Ovington, which lies in well-wooded country not far from Southampton Water and the Hampshire chalk streams.

Veronica has been for the whole term at Yeldersley with the Fitzh. Wrights with Miss Boyes. Michael at Winchester and we were very glad to meet together by Dec 23rd. We had lots to do at Rookwood with hockey, football, ferreting, fives at the Cathedral Choir School and we flooded the asphalte court, which was excellent for skating. Miss Pym came to us soon after Xmas.
